System hang at OS Loader screen

I have a laptop that I was upgrading the software on, and the I.E. 5.5
upgrade crashed the computer. Now when the computer boots it hangs at:

OS Loader V4.01
...

Press spacebar NOW to invoke Hardware Profile/Last Known Good menu

Pressing spacebar does nothing. If you select VGA mode you get:

OS Loader V4.01
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT\System32\config\system

And then it hangs there. I tried to run the setup from CD and do a
repair, but it can't find the installation, I assume because it's NTFS.

Anybody know a somewhat easy fix for this? There's a ton of software on
it that I really don't want to reinstall.

TIA

The "system" file, which is a key part of the Windows
Registry, is damaged.
This situation is fatal. The "system" portion of the
registry is critical to HAL initialization of the Windows
NT Kernel (NTOSKRNL.EXE). It provides the configuration
information needed to load critical system drivers.

Use the Windows NT Repair mode on the Setup disc to repair
the situation.
YOU MUST HAVE A RECENT "RDISK" (repair diskette) for this
to be successful!

If you don't then you can find the copy originally created
when you installed Windows NT in C:\WINNT\repair.
You'll need a boot disk which you can get from
www.ntfs.com to access the drive from DOS (or use another
computer running Windows NT)
Type:
copy C:\WINNT\repair\system._ C:\WINNT\System32
\Config\system
Hardware changes you've made since installation won't be
reflected.

Note: ERDNT is a third-party utility program you can use
to maintain buckups of the registry.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried what you suggested and after the
repair it rebooted, then wanted the CD so it continue setting up NT.
Now I get a BSOD:

*** STOP: 0x00000093 (0x000000202,0x00000001,0x00000000,0x00000000)
INVALID_KERNEL_HANDLE

CPU:GenuineIntel 6.5.2 irql:1f SYSVER 0xf0000565

I found article 156527 and renamed the
c:\winnt\system32\netware\nwfs.sys to nwfs.old like it suggested.
But it still BS at the same spot.

It never had a security dongle so I didn't look at 157912.
